Wanjiru’s journey is one of purpose, depth, and quiet impact.
Originally from Kenya, she moved to San Diego in 1993 to pursue her graduate studies and went on to earn her PhD in Industrial and Organizational Psychology by the age of 30, a goal she set for herself and achieved.
Although she initially planned to return to Kenya to work with global organizations focused on women’s development, life led her in a different direction, one that revealed her deeper purpose.
Over the years, Wanjiru transitioned from corporate roles into nonprofit work, focusing on refugee and immigrant communities. It was here she discovered her role as a cultural bridge, helping individuals and families navigate complex systems like education, healthcare, and child protection, while also helping institutions better understand the people they serve.
Her work exposed the real impact of cultural disconnect, especially within systems that do not fully consider the lived experiences of diverse communities. This led her to deepen her work in cultural awareness and responsiveness.
One significant milestone in her journey was helping to create the Cultural Responsiveness Academy at the Academy for Professional Excellence, where she contributed to training health and human service professionals across Southern California.
Today, through her company, Cultural Synergy Solutions, Wanjiru supports global organizations in transforming cultural diversity into a strength, one that drives collaboration, creativity, and sustainable growth.
For Wanjiru, community has always been important. Inspired by the “Kiamas” led by her mother and grandmother, spaces where women gathered to support each other emotionally and financially, she sees Belle Sisters as an extension of that tradition: a global sisterhood built on connection and strength.
What success looks like for her:
Success is found in impact, in those quiet moments when her work shifts someone’s perspective or practice. When others grow because of something she shared, it reminds her that she is walking in purpose.
Her approach to challenges:
As a deep thinker, Wanjiru leans into reflection, prayer, and stillness. Rather than focusing on what is happening to her, she asks: What can I learn from this? That mindset continues to guide her forward.
Her advice to Belle Sisters:
Continue to learn from one another and build strong, supportive communities just like the women who came before us. There is power in shared growth and collective strength.
A life lesson she holds onto:
Trust the timing of your journey. As she reflects through Ecclesiastes 3:11, everything unfolds beautifully in its time, even when we don’t fully understand it yet.
Wanjiru’s story is a reminder that purpose doesn’t always follow the path we planned but when we stay open, it leads us exactly where we are meant to be.
Join us in celebrating this week’s Belle of the Week!
